This activity is designed for parents and their children between the ages of 4 and 7. Younger children may require more assistance.
The Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, and Fort Normandeau in Red Deer are run by the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society. All of these are excellent places in to go for nature walks and to learn about history and nature.
Learning Activity:
- Go to waskasoopark.ca and explore the website.
- Check out the Species List to learn what kinds of creatures and plants can be found in the Waskasoo Park areas.
- Use Google Search or Google Image Search to look up any species you don’t know
- OPTIONAL: Plan a trip to visit Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, or Fort Normandeau
Questions for children when exploring the website OR one of the parks:
- What kind of trees to pine cones grow on? Name as many as you can think of.
- Name four animals that live in the forests.
- Name four animals that live in the lakes and ponds.
- What is your favourite animal?
- What do you like about nature?
